MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Norfolk State softball team ended the Holy City Showdown on a high note, getting out of a jam in the seventh before taking a 4-3 victory over Charleston Southern in eight innings at Patriot's Point Sports Complex.
The Spartans tied the game up in the fifth, but the Buccaneers had a chance in the seventh to end it. NSU, however, got the second out of the inning at home to keep it tied. They also worked out of trouble in the eighth as well to hold on for the win.
Freshman
Kayla Porter pitched all eight innings and allowed nine hits but just three runs, two earned. She ran her record to 2-1 on the year, while NSU improved to 10-16. Charleston Southern fell to 16-9.
Sophomore
Keira Randolph did not even need to swing the bat for the Spartans to knot the game at 3-3 in the fifth. A pair of singles were followed by a walk, and Randolph got plunked by the pitch to force home that tying run.
CSU got the third out of the inning, and the Buccaneers had a chance in the seventh. A pair of singles put two runners on base, and Mallory Kasinger then singled into left. Sophomore
Cher Jamison, however, throw out Annie Bakenhus trying to score from second for what would have been the game-ending run.
In the eighth, with a runner on second to start due to the international tiebreaker rule, senior
Jaylene Pryor singled to left to bring home the game-winning run. CSU had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but Porter induced a pair of flyouts to end the game.
The Buccaneers scored two runs in the second inning to get things going. A steal of home on a double steal gave them the first run, and an RBI double by Laina Holmgren made it 2-0.
The Spartans pulled off the double steal for a run in the third, and a fielder's choice RBI in the fourth tied the game at 2-2. An error on the Spartans gave CSU a run in the fourth before NSU tied the game up in the fifth.
Pryor and freshman
Tuli Iosefa each went 2-for-4 on the day, part of an eight-hit afternoon for the Spartans.
Holly Clark (5-4), the fourth of four pitchers for Charleston Southern, took the loss after giving up the game-winning run on just one hit with four strikeouts over the last 2.2 innings.
NSU will begin MEAC play next weekend with a three-game series against Coppin State at home.
