DOVER, Del. – Stephen Baughan drove in a career-high five runs and hit one of Norfolk State's season-high three homers as the Spartans slugged their way past Delaware State, 14-6, to earn a three-game weekend sweep on Sunday at Soldier Field.
Aaron Robinson drove in three and hit his first collegiate homer and
Syeed Mahdi was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Spartans (5-13, 3-0 MEAC North), who have now won three straight for the first time this year and five of their last seven overall.
NSU scored four times in both the first and second innings and never looked back. In the top of the first,
Justin Hayes walked and
Alsander Womack reached on an error before Baughan launched a three-run homer to center field off DSU starter Garrett Lawson for his first round-tripper of the year. Two batters later,
Justin Burrell doubled and later came around on the second Hornet miscue of the frame.
DSU got a run back in the bottom of the first, but Baughan's RBI single preceded a two-run blast by Robinson in the top of the second as the Spartans stretched their lead to 8-1.
Mahdi added a two-run homer, also his first of the season, in the fifth. Baughan and Robinson drove in single runs in the seventh and ninth innings to cap the scoring for NSU, which finished with season highs in runs (14) and hits (14). The Spartans also had three doubles in addition to their three homers, tying their six-double game one performance from Saturday for the most extra-base hits NSU has recorded in a game this year.
Baughan went a season-best 3-for-4 with a double, homer, five RBIs and three runs scored. Robinson finished 2-for-5 with a season-best three RBIs, Mahdi was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, and Burrell doubled twice in four at-bats. Hayes was 1-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.
Seth Hockett (1-0) got the win out of the Spartan bullpen. He pitched the final four innings and allowed just one hit and no runs while striking out three batters.
Lawson (0-4) took the loss for the Hornets after allowing seven hits and eight runs in 1.2 innings of work. Darnell Maisonet and Jared Gillis each went 3-for-5 for DSU.
The Spartans are back in action this Tuesday in a 5 p.m. non-conference game at Longwood.
