ORLANDO, Fla. – Norfolk State men's tennis cruised to a 6-1 win over Niagara on Tuesday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. The win pushes the Spartans' record to 3-0.
NSU took two of three doubles flights to go up 1-0.
Vini Da Silva and
Ignacio Guevel teamed up to defeat Shyam Srinivasan and Eduardo Villalpando, 6-0 in the No. 3-seeded flight. The Spartans then secured the doubles point with a 6-4 victory by
Andres Alcaraz and
Dan Dumitrascu in the top-seeded match.
The Purple Eagles (1-9) avoided the sweep at the No. 2-seeded doubles, where Josh Wilson and Brent Boleslav downed
Flavian Fernandez and
Agustin Carrizo, 6-4.
Norfolk State won the first five singles matches to seal the win early. Carrizo won, 6-1, 6-0, over Srinivasan in the fifth-seeded flight. Then, Fernandez downed Boleslav, 6-2, 6-2, in the fourth-seeded match.
In the No. 3-seeded match, Dumitrascu was victorious over Finnbar Adams, 6-2, 6-1 – winning the match for the Spartans.
With the outcome decided, Da Silva defeated Wilson, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2-seeded singles.
Niagara did not record a singles point until the final flight of the day. Taylan Ozdemir won, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4), over Alcaraz in the top-seeded match.
NSU goes for four-straight wins to start the season tomorrow against Coastal Carolina.
