ORLANDO, Fla. – Norfolk State men's tennis suffered its first loss of the year, 4-0, at the hands of Coastal Carolina on Wednesday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
The Chanticleers (6-5) took the doubles point after winning two of three matches. Francesco Cori-Gamero and Zak Talic downed
Flavian Fernandez and
Agustin Carrizo, 6-2, in the second-seeded flight.
NSU (3-1) was victorious in the third-seeded match, where
Vini Da Silva and
Ignacio Guevel teamed up to beat Paul Boulay and Juan Castellanos, 6-4. Coastal Carolina then prevailed in a tightly-contested match in the top-seeded flight. Luiz Faria and Lawrence Perrin defeated
Andres Alcaraz and
Dan Dumitrascu, 7-6.
The Chanticleers won the first three singles matches to end the day early. Dumitrascu fell to Gonzalez Achondo in the No. 3-seeded match, 7-6, 6-1, before Boulay defeated Fernandez, 6-2, 6-3, in the fourth-seeded flight.
Castellanos won the match with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Carrizo in the fifth-seeded flight.
Two matches went unfinished, both tied at 1-1. Alcaraz trailed Faria, in the third set, 5-2, after splitting the first two sets, 3-6, 6-1. Da Silva dropped his first set to Talic, 7-5, in the second-seeded match before winning, 6-4, in the second set.
NSU looks to rebound against James Madison on Thursday.
