Appalachian State Shuts Down NSU

NORFOLK, Va. – Appalachian State held the Spartans to just six hits in a pair of games on Tuesday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field, and the Mountaineers came away with two victories over the Norfolk State softball team.

NSU had four hits in a 5-1 setback in game 1, and Appalachian State needed just five innings to win game 2, 9-0. It marked the second of two straight doubleheaders between the two teams after they played a pair of games on Monday.

The Mountaineers (10-10) were never able to put a big inning together in the first contest on Tuesday. They scored the first two runs on Sidney Russell's single past the third base bag in the first inning. NSU turned a double play in the third with the bases loaded, getting one of those outs at home, before Megan Walker followed with a single into left to make it 3-0.

Jenny Dodd added an RBI double in the fourth, and Baylee Morton tallied a solo homer in the fifth for a five-run lead. The Spartans scored in the bottom of the seventh thanks to three of their four hits coming in the frame. Junior Hunter Halford laid down a bunt single and went to second on an error on the throw to first. She scored when senior Seana Moriarty lined one back up the middle.

Freshman Tuli Iosefa also singled later in the inning, but NSU stranded a pair of runners to end the game.

The Mountaineers had 13 hits in the first contest of the day but left 10 runners on base. Callie Kuykendall (2-2) pitched all seven innings and allowed four hits and one earned run with five strikeouts.

Annaleise Kennedy (2-0) allowed just two hits in a five-inning shutout in game 2. The big blow for Appalachian State came in the third, when Haley Stewart launched a grand slam over the center field fence.

The Mountaineers had scored two runs in the first and then another in the second on an RBI single. Another RBI single and sac fly in the fourth completed the scoring.

Halford finished 2-for-4 on the day, the only Spartan player with two hits.

The Spartans will turn right around and head to North Carolina A&T for a pair of games on Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m.
