ORLANDO, Fla. – Norfolk State women's tennis lost, 6-1, to Radford on Wednesday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
Doubles competition went to the wire, with the Highlanders (5-5) winning the final match to secure the point.
The two teams split the first two flights. Jeanie Acierto and Zoe Fraser defeated
Tyrika Lee and
Makayla Peterson, 6-0, in the third-seeded match. Norfolk State (1-3) prevailed in the top-seeded flight, where
Dajana Cvjetkovic and
Paula Fortuno downed Natalie Sayer and Tyler Blalock, 6-2.
Radford took the doubles point with a 6-3 victory by the pairing of Drousile Dzeubou and Lotti Meszaros.
NSU ceded two points in singles play by defaulting at the No. 5 and No. 6-seeded flights.
Meszaros won in two sets over
Ana Popovic, 6-0, 6-4, in the third-seeded match. Sayer then defeated Fortuno in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 2-seeded flight.
Cvjetkovic lost for the first time this season in singles play, falling to Dzeubou in three sets in the top-seeded flight. Dzeubou took the first set, 6-4, before rallying to win the next two sets, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7).
Bruna Goncalves prevented a sweep with a three-set victory in the fourth-seeded match. Blalock went ahead early with a 7-5 victory in the first set. Goncalves then won set two, 6-3, before winning a marathon in the final set, 1-0 (14-12).
The Spartans complete their stay in Florida with a match against John Carroll on Friday.
