VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – With a chance to clinch at least a share of the MEAC Northern Division title on Sunday, Norfolk State men's tennis fell to Morgan State, 4-2, in a tightly-contested battle.
The Spartans (7-5, 2-1) started out hot, taking the doubles point. At top-seeded doubles,
Andres Alcaraz and
Dan Dumitrascu downed Sebastian Lopez and Ogukhan Ceylan, 6-2.
Vini Da Silva and
Ignacio Guevel wrapped up the doubles point with a 6-1 victory against Lucas Krusinski and Arjun Ramakrishnan on the second court.
The final doubles match between
Flavian Fernandez and
Agustin Carrizo and Nihit Rawal and Serhii Kharcev went unfinished with Fernandez and Carrizo on top 5-1.
The Bears (12-4, 4-0) regained their footing in singles action, winning five of the six matches.
Shrey Gupta started singles competition with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Fernandez on the third court. Alcaraz recorded NSU's final win of the match in the second-seeded flight. The sophomore bested Krusinski, 7-6, 6-2.
Trailing 2-1, MSU won the next three matches to clinch the Northern Division outright.
In the No. 4-seeded flight, Lopez defeated Dumitrascu 7-6, 7-5. The top-seeded match went the distance with Ramakrishnan beating Da Silva 6-0, 6-7, 6-4.
Rawal provided the winning point on court six, sweeping Guevel 6-1, 6-2.
Carrizo's match with Ceylon on court five went unfinished. Ceylon took the first set 6-4, and Carrizo led 2-1 in the second.
The Spartans wrap up the regular season on Monday morning against Coppin State at 11 a.m.
