Coppin State Wins Pitchers' Duel with NSU, 2-1

HANOVER, Md. – Aaron Rea struck out 13 batters over 7.2 innings as Coppin State edged out Norfolk State 2-1 in the series finale at Joe Cannon Stadium on Sunday.

Rea (4-4) allowed seven hits and one run to outduel the Spartans' pitching duo of Trey Hanchey and Seth Hockett as the Eagles (15-18-1, 14-3 MEAC North) won their second series over NSU (13-23, 10-8) this season.

CSU managed just a pair of sacrifice flies, by Nazier McIlwain in the first and Caleb Duhay in the fifth. But that ended up being enough as Rea eluded trouble consistently by fanning 13 hitters.

The Spartans got the leadoff batter on base in three of the first four innings and had base runners in seven of the nine frames, but could push across only one run. That came via second baseman Alsander Womack's second homer of the season, a solo shot to left that led off the eighth. Two outs after Womack's blast, Tony Leite doubled to chase Rea from the game. But CSU starting third baseman Corey Treyes earned his second save of the series by recording the final four outs for the win.

The loss spoiled a well-pitched game by the Spartans. Hanchey (0-7) worked the first 4.2 innings and allowed five hits and two runs while striking out five. Hockett pitched the final 3.1 innings without yielding a run, and struck out five.

Leite and Justin Hayes both went 2-for-4 for the Spartans. Andres Santana was 3-for-5 for the Eagles.

NSU steps out of conference for a 6:05 p.m. Tuesday night game at James Madison.
