Meet Results
ETTRICK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's track and field continued to round into postseason form, as the Spartans secured six first-place finishes at the Virginia State Trojan Invitational on Saturday.
Five of the Spartans event victories came on the track, with wins in the sprints (100 and 400-meter dashes), middle distance (800) and long distance (5,000/10,000) races. Junior
Bill Kemboi had one of the team's top performances as the Spartans swept first through third in the 10,000 meters. Kemboi, the All-MEAC cross country runner, won the 10K with a time of 31 minutes, 20.80 seconds, the third-fastest time in the conference this year. Teammates
Festus Bett (31:25.79) and
Ian Kipkogei (32:27.71) were second and third, respectively, at the VSU meet.
Freshman
Keith Brown had his second 100-meter dash win of the outdoor season at VSU. He clocked a time of 10.69 seconds to win the event, while senior
Jaylen Carr was fifth in 10.89.
Brown also placed in the top five in the 200 meters, finishing fourth in 22.06 seconds. Teammate and classmate
Trequan Barnes (21.55) was the runner-up in the same event.
Sophomore
Jaylen Banks won the 400-meter dash (48.40), sophomore
Felix Kiprotich won the 800 (1:56.55) and senior
Haileyesus Demsie won the 5,000 (16:13.53).
Barnes, Carr, Brown and
Ashton Thoroughgood picked up a second-place finish in NSU's only relay of the day, the 4x100 meters. The group clocked a time of 41.60 seconds.
In the field events, sophomore
Kequan Henley cleared a personal-best 6 feet, 6.75 inches to take the high jump title. Freshman
Zaire Barnes posted his collegiate-best effort in the shot put, with a top throw of 44-5.5. He took fourth in the event.
The Spartans compete this Saturday at the Virginia Grand Prix in Charlottesville, their final meet before the MEAC Outdoor Championships the following weekend.
