Aggies Start Fast, Top Spartans 12-3 in MEAC Tournament

Baughan, Herrera Go Deep for NSU

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Stephen Baughan and Ismael Herrera both homered for the second straight day, but North Carolina A&T's 15-hit attack proved to be too much in the Aggies' 12-3 win over Norfolk State in a winner's bracket game of the 2018 MEAC Baseball Tournament on Thursday night at Sliwa Stadium.

The Spartans (19-29) now face Bethune-Cookman on Friday in an elimination game. The Aggies (30-23), the MEAC Southern Division regular-season champion, advance to face the winner of Thursday's late game between Coppin State and Florida A&M.

The Aggies wasted no time gaining the early edge, scoring three times with two outs in the bottom of the first. NSU freshman Seth Hockett, making just his fourth start of the season, retired the first two batters in the inning before A&T drew a pair of walks. Jarrett Norman and Ryne Stanley hit RBI singles and an NSU error in the frame also led to a third Aggie run.

N.C. A&T tacked on another run on a Spartan miscue in the second and scored three in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. The Aggies benefitted from three infield singles and a wild pitch in the three-run fourth.

Herrera put NSU on the board with a fifth-inning solo home run, his second of the tournament. The senior backstop did not have a homer in his career before this week.

The Aggies put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth, with all five runs being unearned due to a costly two-out NSU error. Zach McLean hit a grand slam to highlight the uprising and make the score 12-1.

Baughan belted a solo homer and Terrence Pinkston added a sacrifice fly in the seventh to cap the scoring. The homer was Baughan's team-leading eighth of the season, matching Brandon Hairston (2010) for the most by a Spartan in any season in the program's Division I era.

NSU second baseman Alsander Womack notched his second straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Six different players had two hits for A&T.

Hockett (2-2) took the loss for NSU, allowing seven runs, four earned, in four innings of work. A&T's Tim Luth (6-2) picked up the win after giving up three runs, two earned, over seven innings.
