Milton Caps Another High Jump Sweep as Spartan Men Take Early Lead at MEAC Outdoor Meet

Meet Results

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Jacob Milton kept his streak of MEAC high jump titles intact, completing his second straight yearly sweep of the conference gold medals in the event to kick off the first day of the MEAC Outdoor Championships Thursday on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

Milton cleared 7 feet, 1 inch, his second-best height of the outdoor season, en route to a defense of his outdoor high jump title. He has now won the indoor and outdoor championships in all four conference championship meets in which he has competed.

Led by Milton and fellow sophomore Garth Warner's runner-up finish, the Spartans scored 21 points in the high jump to take the early lead in the team standings. The Spartans have 29 points through the first three scored events.

In addition to Milton claiming his fifth first-place finish in the high jump this outdoor season, Warner and another sophomore, Kequan Henley, also made strong showings Thursday. Warner cleared a season-best 6-11 to finish as the runner-up behind Milton. It was Warner's second conference silver medal this year.

Henley, meanwhile, continued his strong outdoor season by clearing a season-best 6-7 to place sixth.

Junior Anteneh Girma capped Thursday's opening day for the men with a runner-up finish in the 10,000 meters (31 minutes, 45.34 seconds).

On the women's side, the Spartans are sixth after scoring five points in the first three events. Sophomore Daiysa Burrell placed fifth in the discus (137-7) and sophomore Caroline Samoei finished eighth in the 10,000 (43:50.31).

In Friday's prelims, junior Tyrika Lee posted a personal record in the 200 meters. She clocked a time of 23.73 seconds, her first career sub-24.00 200m, and the fifth-fastest qualifying time in Friday's prelims. The 200m final is Saturday.

Sophomore Jaylen Banks nearly set his PR in the 400 hurdles. He posted a time of 51.56 seconds, the second-fastest qualifying time for Saturday's final.

Friday's second day of action gets underway at 9 a.m. with the conclusion of the decathlon and heptathlon events. Junior Kellyann James sits in sixth in the heptathlon with three events remaining.
