N.C. A&T Comes On Strong Late in 3-1 Win over NSU

BALTIMORE, Md. – Courtney Pitt and Leila Haynesworth combined for 34 kills to lead North Carolina A&T to a 3-1 win over the Norfolk State volleyball team on Friday afternoon in the Charm City Classic.

The Spartans held firm early in the match at Morgan State's Hill Field House. The Aggies needed a few extra serves to win the first set, 27-25, before NSU won the second set, 25-21. The Spartans hit .365 during that time.

North Carolina A&T, however, hit .769 in the third set to win 25-12, and the Aggies went on to win the last set, 25-22. While improving to 4-6 on the year, they also held Norfolk State (0-9) in check the last two sets.

Junior Bojana Bolozan had 11 kills to lead the Spartans, while junior Daiysa Burrell added a career-high nine kills. As a team, they hit .200 for the match.

Pitt totaled 20 kills on a .576 attack percentage, while Haynesworth added 14 kills while hitting at a .458 clip. The Aggies hit .321 as a team and held a 12-6 edge in service aces. But on the flip side, they did give up a lot of points thanks to 19 service errors.

The first and second sets went completely different for NSU. The Spartans jumped out to an early lead in the first set only to have the Aggies eventually complete the comeback. In the second, NSU was locked in a tight battle before grabbing the lead and holding on the rest of the way.

The score stood at 11-5 early in the first set in favor of the Spartans after a kill by sophomore Taylor Eichelberger. But runs of 6-1 and 9-3 for the Aggies gave them a two-point lead. A kill by Eichelberger and a service ace from Bolozan helped the Spartans go back in front by a 24-23 margin. But Haynesworth and Pitt combined for three kills to allow the Aggies to surge for the early lead.

Pitt had eight kills in the first set alone. In the second, meanwhile, junior Anna Rupertova led the Spartans with five. One of those kills came during a span when NSU won four of five points. That broke a 9-9 tie and gave the Spartans the lead for good. They led by three at that point and by as much as four. A&T never got closer than two as the teams essentially traded points for a good portion of the set.

The Aggies took control from there. They led 11-3 early in the third set and also used an 8-1 run later on to pull ahead by more than 10. They also won the first four points of the fourth set and also ran off six straight a little later after the Spartans had gotten to within one. Only a late 6-0 run by the Spartans, with the Aggies serving for the match, got the score as close as it was.

Rupertova finished with seven kills, and Eichelberger added five. Lily Walton had five service aces for the Aggies.

The Spartans will play South Carolina State on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Hill Field House.
