NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State overcame a late deficit in the third set to sweep the Norfolk State volleyball team by a 3-0 score on Friday evening at Gill Gymnasium.
The Eagles needed extra points in the third for the sweep, coming away with a 25-15, 25-17 and 26-24 victory in MEAC play.
CSU (7-12, 3-2 MEAC) pulled away in the first set and had big runs at the beginning and end of the second. But NSU had a shot of extending the match in the third.
The Spartans (0-14, 0-5 MEAC) were down 10-7 and later 14-10 in that third stanza before junior
Jannel Ezeagwu had two kills and a block to help tie the score. She had two more kills as NSU was able to go up by two. Later tied at 21-all, they got points from junior
Quiana Griffin and senior
Jill Aquino to get to set point at 24-21.
The Eagles, however, got three kills and two blocks over the next five serves to stun the Spartans and avoid a fourth set.
Ezeagwu finished with six kills and seven blocks. Junior
Julisa Carrizosa led NSU with eight kills and 11 digs.
Coppin State hit .286 and got 15 kills and 10 digs from Miajavon Coleman.
NSU was down 11-6 in the first set before Carrizosa had three straight kills. Ezeagwu and senior
Anna Rupertova teamed up for a block to tie the score at 13-all later on. But the Eagles went on a 12-2 run to close out the set.
CSU won the first seven points and 13 of the first 15 in the second set. A 7-1 run helped close the gap for Norfolk State, highlighted near the end by a pair of aces from Aquino. Griffin, Carrizosa and sophomore
Breona Young each landed kills to eventually cut the Eagle lead to 18-15. But Coppin State then won seven of the last nine points of the set for the 2-0 lead in the match.
The Spartans hit .114 for the evening, including .211 in the third set, and finished with eight blocks as a team.
NSU will next host Morgan State on Monday night at 6 p.m.
