A&T Remains Perfect with 3-0 Win over NSU

NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina A&T stayed perfect in the MEAC with a 3-0 victory over the Norfolk State volleyball team in a conference match on Friday night at Gill Gymnasium.

The Aggies pulled ahead in the first and third sets to win both by 25-22 margins. They also had made a big run in the middle of the second on the way to a 25-17 victory there as well.

NSU limited A&T to a .094 attack percentage, although the Spartans hit just .056 themselves. They fell to 1-7 in the league and 1-17 overall with the loss. Junior Quiana Griffin led the way with seven kills while hitting .211.

North Carolina A&T, meanwhile, improved to 11-12 overall, 9-0 in the MEAC, thanks in part to 10 kills from Fatimah Shabazz and eight from Courteney Pitt.

There came a point later in the first and third sets when the Aggies were able to surge ahead for good. In the first, it came with NSU up 16-14. A&T won seven of eight points for a four-point edge, 21-17. It had been a back-and-forth start to the match, including the Aggies up 12-10 before the Spartans took a 16-14 lead thanks in part to a kill and block from Griffin.

Late in the set, NSU was within one at 23-22 on a kill from senior Halley McKnight before back-to-back Aggie kills ended it.

A couple of big runs in the third set by A&T did NSU in. Despite dropping the first three points, NSU built an 8-5 lead with kills from four different players. The Aggies eventually won six in a row for a 12-9 edge. Still, several errors on A&T helped the Spartans eventually take a one-point edge at 18-17.

But then, NSU called a pair of timeouts during a 7-0 Aggie run that made it 24-18. The Spartans closed the gap by winning the next four points before Edie Brewer ended the match with a kill for A&T.

The Spartans were also up 5-3 in the third, but a long 14-4 run by the Aggie built an eight-point advantage. Their largest advantage in the set was eight.

Besides Griffin, junior Julisa Carrizosa also added some offense with six kills, six digs and three blocks. McKnight contributed 15 assists, five digs, four kills and two blocks as well.

Brewer totaled six kills, 14 assists, 13 digs, two aces and two blocks for the Aggies.

NSU will host North Carolina Central on Sunday at 1 p.m. to close out the weekend.
