Hawk Offense Too Much for NSU in 3-0 Loss

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Maryland Eastern Shore hit better than .400 on the way to a 3-0 win over the Norfolk State volleyball team on Friday evening at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.
 
The Hawks finished with just nine errors while attacking at a .419 clip. They kept NSU winless on the season after pulling off the sweep with scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-15.
 
NSU had a pair of players finish with five kills each in senior Anna Rupertova and junior Julisa Carrizosa. The latter also had a team-high eight digs. The Spartans dropped to 0-3 in the MEAC and 0-12 overall.
 
For Maryland Eastern Shore (6-12 overall, 1-2 MEAC), Ilina Spasova hit .591 with 14 kills. Alexis Lee added eight kills, and Tatjana Trifkovic added seven with six digs and three blocks.
 
The Hawks had strong starts in all three sets, and in the first two, NSU made runs to close the gap. MDES won the first seven points of the match and led 15-4 a little while later. Down 22-11, the Spartans got going. Kills by senior Bojana Bolozan and junior Quiana Griffin started a 10-2 run. Senior Jill Aquino had a pair of service aces in there as well to get the team within 24-21.
 
A service error by NSU ended the set, and the Hawks went out and scored the first five points of the second set on the way to a 16-6 lead. Again, the Spartans chipped away. Senior Halley McKnight had a pair of aces, and Bolozan had a kill and a block during what ultimately became a 9-3 run.
 
Up by just four at 21-17, the Hawks won four of the last five points of the set. They had runs of 8-0 and 6-1 on the way to a 10-point victory in the third stanza.
 
The Spartans hit .174 in the third set and .118 overall.
 
NSU will take on Delaware State on Sunday at DSU's Memorial Hall beginning at 2 p.m.
