Chanette Hicks posted the first triple-double in Norfolk State's Division I history, and
La'Deja James,
Armani Franklin and
Shekinah Howard scored career highs in the Spartans' 123-48 victory over the Dragons of Virginia University of Lynchburg on Thursday night at Echols Hall.
Hicks had the triple-double in the bag by the end of the third quarter, recording her 10
th steal and 10
th steal all in the same sequence with 2:07 remaining in the third. Hicks finished the game with 20 points along with 14 assists and 11 steals. Her 14 assists also tied the Spartans' DI record for assists in one game. Â The Spartans' last triple-double was back in 1996, when Michelle Sessoms posted 16 points, 14 rebounds and 11 steals against St. Paul's College.
James finished the game with a career-high 29 points, shooting 10-of-14 from the field and going 5-of-8 from behind the arc. James surpassed her previous career-high of 20 points with 6:52 left in the third quarter. Â Her previous career-high was last season on January 5, in a matchup against Delaware State.
Franklin also filled up the stat sheet, shooting an efficient 6-of-7 from the floor with a total of 18 points. Her previous career-high was in 2017, against UNC Greensboro. Franklin also had a career-high seven steals, surpassing her previous high of four steals.
Howard provided 10 points off the bench, another career high for the Spartans. Her previous career-high was eight points in the opening game against Liberty.
Blaire Thomas recorded a double-double for the Spartans, scoring 15 points and snagging 11 rebounds. Thomas has been dominant on the boards in the first three games, averaging 9.3 rebounds.
Mikaela Jones was also active in the paint, grabbing seven rebounds against the Dragons. For the game the Spartans held a plus-20 rebounding margin, with 52 rebounds compared to the Dragon's 32.
The Spartans started early and never looked back, outscoring the Dragons 31-4 and shooting 52% from the field in the first quarter. After scoring just four points in the first quarter, the Dragons responded with 18 points in the second. Despite the Dragons' push, the Spartans were up 55-22 at the end of the first half.
The Spartans recorded 27 steals and forced 40 turnovers by the Dragons. The 27 steals were the most in a game since 2003, and the fourth-most in NSU's DI history.
Just like the first quarter, the Spartans had an impressive 33-9 run to begin the second half. For the game the Spartans made 49.5% percent of their field goals, and their 123 points was the highest scoring output since 1996. Along with a high shooting percentage from the floor the Spartans were aggressive in attacking the Dragons' defense, converting 16 points at the charity stripe.

Cam Platt-Morris and
Ta'Liyah Edmonds each scored their first career points in a Spartan uniform. Edmonds scored on a layup in the third quarter, while Platt-Morris hit a three-pointer in the fourth quarter. All 11 players who dressed for the game scored at least one bucket for NSU.
Tonight's game was the start of a three-game homestand for the Spartans, with High Point visiting on Nov. 20 and La Salle on Nov. 22.
