NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's basketball team let an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter slip away, as the Robert Morris Colonials came away with a 69-62 overtime win on Wednesday morning in Echols Hall.
Robert Morris outscored NSU 33-15 in the fourth quarter and overtime combined, going 7-of-7 on 3-pointers during that span. Colonials' guard Honoka Ikematsu scored nine of her 15 points in overtime to lead the Colonials in the win. Robert Morris started the overtime period with a 7-3 run that forced the Spartans to play from behind the rest of the way.
The Colonials outscored the Spartans 19-8 in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 55-55 and send the game to overtime. Robert Morris went 5-of-5 from behind the arc in the final quarter, paced by Isabella Posset's three treys. Colonials' leading scorer Nneka Ezeigbo tied the game following a layup with 33 seconds left to send the game to overtime. The Spartans had a chance to win the game, but
Blaire Thomas had a three-pointer rim out at the end of regulation.
RMU used a 7-0 run in the overtime, which included two 3-pointers by Ikematsu, to pull away from the Spartans.
The Spartans opened up a double-digit lead in the third quarter and led 47-36 entering the final quarter after a
Chanette Hicks layup with 18 seconds remaining in the period.
The game was close in the first half, with neither team opening up more than a six-point lead. The Spartans held a 32-26 advantage following Thomas' buzzer beating 3-pointer at the end of the half.
Hicks had her eighth game of at least 20 points this season, leading the Spartans with 23 points along with three assists and two steals.
Cam Platt-Morris scored a career-high 11 points to provide some energy off the bench for NSU, while
Armani Franklin scored nine. Thomas was close to a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
Ezeigbo and Ikematsu paced the Colonials with 15 points each. Posset fouled out, but went off for nine points in the fourth quarter to help jumpstart the Colonials' comeback.
The Spartans shot better from the floor, going 23-53 (43.4%) compared to the Colonials' 22-55 (40%). The Colonials did damage from behind the arc however, shooting 11-18 (61.1%) The Colonials also had a more balanced attack, with four players reaching double-figures compared to NSU's two.
The Spartans will close out a stretch of three games in a span of six days, traveling to William & Mary on Friday for a noon tipoff.
