NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior
Martha Bissah opened indoor track and field season in style by winning the 3,000 meters on Sunday afternoon at the CNU Holiday Open.
The Spartans only took their distance runners to compete in the season-opening meet. Bissah highlighted their efforts by winning the 3K in a time of 9 minutes, 48.53 seconds, a personal best. The flat-track time was converted by the NCAA for qualification purposes to 9:43.53, which ranks seventh in the nation after one week.
Other Spartans also took fourth through sixth places in the 3,000. Sophomore
Fridah Koech was fourth in 10:33.95, senior
Caroline Samoei was fifth in 10:47.96 and
Kara Grant placed sixth in 11:03.92.
NSU is now off for the remainder of the semester and holiday break. Indoor season resumes for the Spartans with the Father Diamond Invitational hosted by George Mason University on Jan. 4.
