GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Norfolk State bowling team ended the second MEAC regular season meet this weekend with a 4-5 overall record in an improved showing from the first meet a few months ago.
The Spartans earned wins over Howard, Morgan State, Coppin State and Bethune-Cookman during the two-day tournament at the AMF Lanes in Greensboro hosted by North Carolina A&T. Along with the first one in November, the two regular season meets determined seeding for the MEAC Championship next month.
With an average of 154.3 over the course of the two meets, however, the Spartans failed to qualify for the MEAC Championship set for March 22-24. Seeding was based on a collective average of the two regular season conference meets.
The Spartans averaged 159.2 for the 50 games they bowled on the weekend, including five Baker games each match on Sunday. The Spartans earned wins over Bethune-Cookman and Morgan State after closing Saturday with a pair of victories as well.
NSU began the tournament with three losses in traditional play on Saturday. That included setbacks to No. 14 UAB (910-698), No. 6 Maryland Eastern Shore (860-797) and No. 22 Monmouth (867-812). With freshman
McKayla Lang rolling a 209, the Spartans did earn an 834-805 triumph over Howard. Then to close out the day, the Spartans topped Coppin State 822-793.
Lang finished with the highest average on the day of all five NSU bowlers at 181.8. Senior
Alexa Rodriguez averaged 173.4, while freshmen
Crystal Brewer,
Trinity Gray and
Dieonjonai Haupt rounded out the lineup.
Sunday's Baker action included wins over Bethune-Cookman to start the day (773-675) and Morgan State two matches later (813-773). In between, NSU fell to No. 12 Delaware State by a 965-840 score. The Spartans then came up just short against Florida A&M, 808-803.
Maryland Eastern Shore earned the top seed in the MEAC tournament after just edging out No. 10 North Carolina A&T in terms of average. Delaware State and UAB finished third and fourth, respectively, while Monmouth and Howard rounded out the top 6 qualifiers for next month's championship.
NSU will head to the Hawk Flight Classic hosted by Monmouth next weekend.
