Men’s Tennis Nabs 6-1 Win over Hampden-Sydney

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Norfolk State men's tennis picked up its first win of the spring dual season on Saturday with a 6-1 victory against Hampden-Sydney at the Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach. The Spartans (1-1) won all three doubles flights and grabbed the first five singles matches as well.
 
Vini Da Silva and Julius Gavin got NSU rolling with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles against Andrew Donelson and Tyler Brice. The Spartans then clinched the doubles point with a 9-7 victory by Dan Dumitrascu and Agustin Carrizo in the second-seeded flight.
 
Flavian Fernandez and Andres Alcaraz punctuated doubles action with an 8-6 result against Michael and Matthew Moody at No. 1 doubles.
 
In singles competition, all five of the Spartans' victories came in straight sets.
 
Fernandez put NSU ahead 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Brayson Burns in the third-seeded flight. Da Silva then brought the Spartans to within a point of clinching the match with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Matthew Moody at No. 1 singles.
 
Alcaraz produced the match-clinching point at No. 2 singles. The junior from Pachuca, Mexico downed Michael Moody 6-2, 6-0 to put the Spartans ahead 4-0.
 
Dumitrascu continued NSU's run with a 6-4, 6-1 result over William Driskill at fourth-seeded singles. Carrizo topped Brice – 6-0, 6-1 – in the No. 5 flight.
 
The Tigers (0-2) grabbed their lone point of the match at No. 6 singles, where Donelson dispatched Gavin 6-1, 6-4.
 
Norfolk State returns to action on March 6 against Bethune-Cookman in the first of three matches at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The Spartans are also scheduled to face Appalachian State on March 7 and Hampton on March 8.
