DOVER, Del. – Norfolk State women's tennis moved to 2-0 in MEAC Northern Division contests with a 6-1 win over Delaware State on Sunday.
The Spartans (3-7) secured the doubles point with ease. On court three,
Bruna Goncalves and
Adriana Strode blanked Alina Polyvana and Yelyzaveta Bessonova – 6-0 – to kick off the match before
Naz Karagoz and
Zoe Fraser clinched the point with a 6-2 win over Sofia Rachi and Anastasia Belkina in the top-seeded flight.
The top-seeded win represented the fifth in a row for the pairing of Karagoz and Fraser. The tandem is 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference action.
The Lady Hornets (3-6, 0-1) prevented a doubles sweep with a 6-4 victory by Cassandra Boltman and Aayushi Chouhan in the second-seeded match.
In singles action, NSU took five of the six matches with four coming in straight sets.
Paula Fortuno doubled the Spartans' advantage with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Belkina on the second court. Goncalves then defeated Chouhan – 6-3, 6-0 – in the fifth-seeded flight.
Karagoz provided the match-clinching point with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Rachi in the top singles flight. The two-time and reigning conference player of the week, Karagoz is now 6-1 on the season and on a four-match winning streak.
DSU picked up its lone singles point on the sixth court, where Bessonova defeated Strode – 6-1, 7-6.
Fraser stumbled in the second set of her match against Boltman on the third court before storming back in the tiebreaker. The sophomore from Virginia Beach split the first two sets – 6-3, 2-6 – before cruising to a 10-2 win in the tiebreaking set.
Joyce Fields put a bow on the Spartans' day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Polyvana in the No. 4-seeded flight.
NSU goes for its third conference victory on the fly when it hosts Howard next Saturday at 1 p.m. That match is the final home contest for the Spartans, who close out their season at Coppin State (April 6), at Morgan State (April 7) and at Hampton (April 10).
