ORLANDO, Fla. – Norfolk State women's tennis fell 4-0 to South Dakota on Thursday at Red Bug Lake Park in Orlando, Florida.
The Coyotes (5-7) jumped ahead 1-0 after an undefeated run through doubles play. USD's Emma Tranberg and Nanette Nylund defeated
Paula Fortuno and
Joyce Fields, 6-2, on the second court, and Jana Lazarevic and Luana Stanciu downed
Bruna Goncalves and
Adriana Strode at No. 3 doubles, 6-1.
South Dakota also held a lead in the unfinished doubles flight on court one. Natka Kmoskova and Anastasia Bondarenko were on top of
Naz Karagoz and
Zoe Fraser, 4-2, when the doubles point was clinched.
Victories at fourth-, fifth- and sixth-seeded singles propelled the Coyotes to the sweep.
On court six, Laura Janickova got the ball rolling with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Strode. Nylund then made the match 3-0 with her 6-3, 6-1 victory over Fields at No. 4 singles.
Bondarenko produced the match-winning point on court five with a 6-3, 6-2 result against Goncalves.
USD held advantages in all three unfinished singles matches.
On court one, Lazarevic led Karagoz – 6-1, 5-4. Fortuno trailed Kmoskov, 7-5, 4-1, at second-seeded doubles.
Fraser was tied 6-6 in the second set of her match against Stanciu after she dropped the first set 6-2.
The Spartans wrap up their time in Florida tomorrow with a match against Hampton. NSU then faces Savannah State on Sunday before its home opener against Longwood on March 14.
