Spartan Baseball Welcomes Savannah State for 3-Game Series

| By:
NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State baseball team continues its home-heavy early-season schedule this weekend as the Spartans welcome MEAC Southern Division opponent Savannah State to Marty L. Miller for a three-game series. The teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and a single game at noon on Sunday.

Live statistics and live video for all three games will be available through NSUSpartans.com.

Since NSU and Savannah State play in separate divisions of the MEAC, the games do not count in the conference standings.

Scouting NSU
The Spartans will be looking to nab their first win of the season this weekend after an 0-10 start. NSU dropped its lone mid-week game during this spring break week, a 17-2 loss to William & Mary on Tuesday. The Spartans' runs came via a two-run homer by Stephen Baughan in the sixth inning. The round-tripper was the first of the year for the junior first baseman, who hit a MEAC-leading nine bombs a year ago.

Baughan's homer was the fourth of the year for the Spartans, which have been hit by four different players.

The Spartans also got two hits from sophomore Seth Hockett, who made his first career start at third base. Hockett, who last played infield in high school, made a team-high 24 appearances on the mound as a freshman last season and already four this season before logging his first career start in the field this week.

NSU is 30-33 all-time against Savannah State. The teams have not met since the 2014 MEAC Tournament at NSU, a game the Spartans won 5-0.

Scouting Savannah State
The Tigers enter the weekend with a 2-4-1 overall record in 2018. This weekend marks the first road games of the year for SSU, which is in its last year in the MEAC before transitioning to the Division II ranks.

The Tigers opened the season by dropping three of four to NSU's MEAC Northern Division rival Coppin State. The Tigers then went 1-1-1 in a three-game set against Nebraska-Omaha last week.

Junior Joey Roberson was named the MEAC Co-Player of the Week for this week after batting .538 in the three-game series with Nebraska-Omaha. Roberson is batting .393 on the year, tops among the team's regulars, with eight RBI.

SSU also does damage on the base paths, with 18 stolen bases on the year. Jalen Atterbury leads the way with six.

Right hander Ian Concevitch has a team-best 14 strikeouts and a 1.84 ERA.
