NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State men's basketball senior
Derrik Jamerson Jr. will compete this week in the 2019 Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship. The event is set to take place from Friday through Sunday at the Mall of America in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The tournament, in its second year of existence, is comprised of seniors who have exhausted their eligibility. It features four-player teams – one substitute per team – from all 32 Division I conferences competing for a grand prize of $100k.
Jamerson will join Kevin Larkin of Delaware State, Justin Ravenel of Florida A&M and Lamar Morgan of Coppin State on the MEAC team.
Each squad gets $1,000 for a pool play win. A total of $150k will be awarded, including the $100k grand prize for the winner. The tournament is run by Intersport.
The 3x3 tournament features one basket on a single half court. Each make from beyond the arc is worth two points, and a basket from inside the arc is worth one. The winner is the first squad to reach 21 points, or the team with the best score after 10 minutes.
The games can be seen live on Twitter (
@3X3UHOOPS) beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with pool play, and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday with the round of 16 and quarterfinal games. The semifinals, set for 3 p.m. on Sunday, along with the third-place and championship games will be shown on ESPN2 and the
WatchESPN app.
Last season, the MEAC team advanced to the semifinals of the tournament after becoming one of eight squads to make it to the championship bracket out of pool play. The MEAC fell to the Big West in the semifinals but defeated the SWAC for a third-place finish.
This year's winner will represent the Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship at the USA Basketball 3x3 Open National Championship later this spring. There, athletes will have the opportunity to be selected to represent the United States in the 2019 FIBA 3x3 World Cup, held June 18-23 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Participating athletes will also be considered for the USA Basketball 3x3 athlete pool.
