Cavaliers Topple NSU, 14-4

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Nic Kent posted four hits and four runs batted in to help Virginia to a 14-4 win over Norfolk State on Wednesday night at Disharoon Park.

NSU first baseman Stephen Baughan hit a solo home run and an RBI double, and designated hitter Alsander Womack also had two hits and two RBIs for the Spartans (11-18) in their first game against an ACC team since facing Duke in 2016.

In the first meeting between the teams since 2009, Baughan got the Spartans on the board first. He doubled in Justin Hayes in the top of the first for a 1-0 NSU lead, but the Cavaliers (21-13) tied the game on Devin Ortiz's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.

U.Va. scored twice in the second and three times in the third to take control. Kent and Tanner Morris had run-scoring hits in the second, while both Ortiz and Alex Tappen knocked in runs in the third.

Baughan brought NSU within 6-2 in the top of the fourth when he led off the inning with a solo homer to left-center, his team-best fourth blast of the season. But the Cavaliers tacked on eight more runs combined in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to pull away. Kent hit an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run single in the five-run sixth.

Womack singled in two runs in the eighth for NSU, part of a 2-for-4 night which extended his hitting streak to a career-best 16 games. Baughan also batted 2-for-4.

For U.Va, Kent went 4-for-5 with four RBIs. Tappen finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Ortiz was 2-for-2 with three runs and two batted in.

Spartan freshman lefty James Deloatch (0-2) got his second straight start in a midweek game and was saddled with the loss. He allowed four hits and three runs, two earned, with two strikeouts in two innings pitched. NSU used seven pitchers on the night.

Chesdin Harrington (2-1), the second of four Cavalier pitchers, picked up the win with 3.2 innings of relief work.

After 12 straight games on the road, the Spartans are home for their next 11, starting with a three-game set with Maryland Eastern Shore this Friday through Sunday at Marty L. Miller Field.
