BALTIMORE, Md. – Norfolk State women's tennis saw its bid to run the table in MEAC Northern Division play dashed by a 4-2 loss at Morgan State – the defending conference tournament champions and preseason divisional favorites – on Sunday.
The Lady Bears (6-11, 4-0 MEAC) took two doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. On the first court, Asmara Rose and Peggy Rooke snapped
Naz Karagoz and
Zoe Fraser's seven-match winning streak with a 7-6 victory.
The Spartans (5-8, 4-1 MEAC) won at No. 2 doubles, where
Paula Fortuno and
Joyce Fields topped Jourdan Wallace and Averianna Mitchell – 6-2. Lastly, Oriane Yehouenou and Dana Santiago bested
Bruna Goncalves and
Adriana Strode by a 6-3 score.
Rose was forced to retire early in her third-seeded singles match against Fraser, and the score was tied 1-1. NSU then took the lead following Karagoz's 6-3, 6-0 sweep of Santiago on the first court.
MSU rallied with three-straight wins to clinch the match. Yehouenou tied the score at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-0 sweep of Fields at No. 4 singles. Rooke then topped Fortuno – 7-6, 7-5.
Wallace topped Strode in straight sets – 6-0, 6-2 – to seal the win for Morgan State.
Goncavles was well on her way to victory in her unfinished match against Mitchell on the fifth court. The native of Governador Valadares, Brazil took the first set 6-2 and was up 4-1 in the second when the match concluded.
The Spartans conclude the regular season against Hampton in a non-conference road clash. The match date against the Lady Pirates will be announced at a later time.
Official seeds for the 2019 MEAC Tournament will be announced prior to the start of the tournament.
