NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team kicked off the 2020 season against Old Dominion at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon, dropping the match 6-0 to the Monarchs.
Zoe Fraser and
Bruna Goncalves were the No. 1 doubles group for the Spartans, matching up against ODU's Yulia Starodubtseva and Alesya Yakubovich. The pair of Monarchs won the match 6-3, but Fraser and Goncalves put up the best result of the day for NSU.
Paula Fortuno and
Joyce Fields made up the No. 2 doubles team for NSU, dropping their match 6-0 to ODU's Holley Hutchinson and Brooke Pilkington. NSU defaulted at the No. 3 doubles.
All five Spartans fell in straight sets during singles play. Fraser had some success in her singles match, taking two games from ODU's Pilkington in a 6-2, 6-0 loss.
Siliah Burke appeared in the No. 5 singles after not participating in the earlier doubles events, dropping her match to 6-0 to ODU's Alexandra Viktorovich. ODU's No. 1, Hutchison, did not participate in singles play, and the Monarchs subsequently defaulted the No. 6 singles match.
