FAIRFAX, Va. – Freshman
Savien Hayes and junior
Trequan Barnes both won an individual event and formed half of NSU's winning 4x400 meter relay team as the Spartan men opened the 2020 portion of their indoor track and field season on Saturday at the Father Diamond Invitational hosted by George Mason.
Hayes won the 400 meters in a time of 49.66 seconds in his first meet as a Spartan. Barnes won the 500 meters in 1:04.68, and to cap the meet, the pair teamed with
Kamil Jihad and
Je'Shawn Walker to post a winning time of 3:24.71 in the 4x400.
In what was a strong showing for the NSU sprinters, Spartans also took second and third in the 200 meters. Sophomore
Kai Cole was runner-up in 22.07 and junior
Keith Brown was third in 22.16.
A total of five Spartans garnered top-five finishes in field events, three coming in the high jump. Senior
Jacob Milton was runner-up in that event with a top height of 6-9. Fellow senior
Garth Warner was third (6-7) and junior
Kequan Henley placed fourth (6-3.25).
Freshmen
Anthony Giacchetta and
Azad Williams also got their Spartan careers off on a high note. Giacchetta placed fourth in the pole vault (13-5.25) and Williams finished fourth in the shot put (47-11.25).
The Spartans return to action this Saturday at the Great Dane Classic hosted by the University of Albany.
