Spartans Ground Eagles in First MEAC Road Trip

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Norfolk State women's basketball team took care of business at Coppin State, defeating the Eagles 85-48 on Monday night at the Physical Education Complex. It marked NSU's largest margin of victory over a MEAC team since the Spartans beat Delaware State 95-55 in the 2014-15 season.

After a slow first quarter, the Spartans took a double-digit lead at the 8:05 mark of the second quarter after a Chanette Hicks jumper. NSU wouldn't look back, maintaining a double-digit lead for the rest of the game. Steadily building their lead, the Spartans had their largest advantage of the game with 3:32 left in regulation after another Hicks' jumper to put the Spartans up by 37 points.

Hicks dropped a game-high 24 points, along with six rebounds, six assists and five steals. Blaire Thomas finished with her second double-double of the season, scoring 20 points and snagging 12 rebounds - both season highs. Two other Spartans scored in double-figures, as La'Deja James finished with 12 points and Armani Franklin scored 10 points. Dana Echols added a season-high eight points and eight rebounds, while De'Janaire Deas registered a career-high four blocked shots.

Aliyah Lawson paced the Eagles with 15 points, followed by Jalynda Salley with 11 points. Reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Year Chance Graham was held to only five points, but grabbed 11 rebounds for the Eagles.

As a team NSU dominated on the inside, outscoring the Eagles 50-24 in the painted area.  The Spartans also held advantages in fast break points (18-4), second chance points (22-10) and points off turnovers (12-3).  The Spartans shot a season-high 36-of-71 (50.7%) from floor, while holding the Eagles to 16-of-61 accuracy (26.2%).

The Spartans continue MEAC play at Howard at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
