NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State junior outfielder
Jazzmaine Hammond collected this year's first MEAC Player of the Week award on Monday when the conference office announced the weekly softball honors. Sophomore
Lily Potter garnered the Pitcher of the Week award as well.
Hammond batted 3-for-7 in three games over the weekend at the Blue Hose Invitational hosted by Presbyterian. She scored three runs with a double, one RBI, three walks and three stolen bases.
A native of Detroit, she batted 2-for-3 with two runs and a double on Sunday in a 6-3 win over Robert Morris. She also had a hit and stole two bases later in the day in a 4-1 victory over South Carolina State. Hammond walked twice and had a stolen base on Saturday in a 3-1 loss to Presbyterian.
Potter, meanwhile, allowed just three runs, one earned, with four strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work over the course of two games. It marked her most extensive action in the circle after pitching just 2.0 innings last year as a freshman.
She threw 1.2 innings of relief against RMU, and then got the start against S.C. State. The Norfolk native earned her first career win by allowing four hits and one earned run with four strikeouts in six innings.
NSU will hold its 2-1 record for more than a week until its next games on Feb. 20 at home against Radford.
