Bissah Caps MEAC Indoor Career with MVP Performance

| By:
LANDOVER, Md. – Martha Bissah capped her MEAC indoor track and field career by earning Most Outstanding Track Athlete honors for the third time as a Spartan, leading the Norfolk State women to a runner-up team finish Saturday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

Bissah won conference titles in the 800 (2:09.17), mile (4:52.27) and 3,000 meters (10:18.66) Saturday. She also ran a leg on the winning distance medley relay on Friday and a leg on the fifth-place 4x400 relay Saturday, contributing a total of 33.5 points to NSU's team total of 131 points.  North Carolina A&T won the team title with 165.

The second-place finish for the Spartan women is their best since capturing a runner-up finish in 2011.

Bissah never lost an individual MEAC indoor championship race in her career, winning a total of 11 gold medals. Last year was the only time she did not win indoor Most Outstanding Runner honors – perhaps only due to her not competing in the 3,000 meters.

Bissah had plenty of company on the medal stand Saturday. Junior Kiara Grant defended her 2019 60-meter title and matched her meet record of 7.22 seconds. Grant was runner-up in the 200m in 23.64 seconds.

Junior Malika Pride placed second in the 400 meters in 54.16 seconds and also finished fifth in the 200 meters in 24.17. Sophomore DaJah Parker-Love also scored in the 60, placing seventh in 7.57 seconds to complete a solid day for NSU in the sprints.

Sophomore Kara Grant also had a busy day, finishing as runner-up in the 800 and fifth in both the mile and 3,000 meters. Fellow sophomore Fridah Koech earned the bronze in the 3,000.

Capping the day on the track, NSU finished fifth in the 4x400 relay. The team of Pride, Grant, Grant and Bissah posted a time of 3:53.72.

Scoring points for the Spartans in the field on Saturday were freshmen Kylis Gilmore and Destiny Hooks in the pole vault and sophomore Tiara Simms in the shot put. Gilmore cleared a personal record 10 feet, 6 inches to take third in the pole vault, and Hooks was fourth (9-6.25). Simms' best throw traveled 39-7.

NSU will wait to hear about possible selections to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in the coming days.
