ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Norfolk State volleyball team hit a season-best .320 Friday afternoon en route to its third straight win, a 3-0 victory at South Carolina State. The Spartans cruised to the win in straight sets by scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-9.
Shonte Seale paced the Spartans (7-11, 3-4 MEAC) with nine kills on just 19 attempts.
Rachel Williams added six kills and both
Paola Matos and Tyler Eichelberger both chipped in with five. The end result was NSU's third win in a row, all against MEAC opponents. The win streak is NSU's longest since 2016. Friday also represented the Spartans' seventh win of the year, also their most since 2016.
SCSU led set 1 9-7 before NSU reeled off seven straight points. The run included a pair of NSU's 10 blocks on the day, with
Gracie Teeter assisting on both. The Bulldogs committed 10 errors in the set.
Seale had three early kills in set 2 as the Spartans jumped out to a 9-2 lead. Seale and Teeter both had kills in a later 6-1 spurt that helped NSU pull away for a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was all NSU from the outset. Teeter started it with two kills and Eichelberger had four of hers as the Spartans scored 14 of the first 16 points in the set. NSU hit .545 in the set with 13 kills against just one attack error.
Teeter had five total blocks on the day and seven other Spartans had at least one.
Nicole Rodriguez led the way with 12 digs, Williams tallied 11 and Seale posted six.
Caris Cross paced NSU with 21 assists.
NSU played a season-high 15 players in the match. Freshman
Shachia Lamb played in her first career match and registered the first kill of her career.
The Spartans cap their road trip with a 1 p.m. match Sunday at North Carolina Central.
