NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State football team collected three of the MEAC's weekly football awards Monday, as left guard
Jalen Powell and defensive backs
Christian Ruffin and
Stuart Anderson Jr. were honored by the conference.
Powell was selected MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Week for the second time this season. Ruffin was named MEAC Rookie of the Week, and Anderson was named MEAC Co-Special Teams Player of the Week following the Spartans' 45-31 win at Howard.
Powell graded out at 97 percent on his assignments against Howard. He recorded five knockdown blocks without committing a penalty or giving up a sack as the Spartans racked up 536 yards of total offense and scored 40+ points for the third straight week.
Powell also won the weekly lineman award following NSU's win over Wake Forest. His latest award marks the Spartans' sixth straight game winning the MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Week. Teammates
Colby Byrd and
Justin Redd have also each won the award twice this year.
Ruffin, a freshman from Raleigh, North Carolina, made two tackles and also returned a blocked punt four yards for a touchdown in the second half at Howard. That punt was blocked by Anderson, who also made a career-high eight tackles between his time on special teams and at safety.
The Spartans (5-2, 1-0 MEAC)Â put their five-game winning streak on the line Saturday when they host Morgan State at 2 p.m.
