Shumate Announces Baseball Coaching Staff Additions

| By:
NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State head baseball coach Keith Shumate announced Friday three additions to his coaching staff.

Shumate announced the hiring of Matt Rein as pitching coach, the return of Matt Blevins as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator and the addition of Tom McManus as volunteer assistant coach.

Previously, Rein served four years as pitching coach at Radford University. In 2021, the Highlanders ranked second in the Big South in team ERA at 4.65. Radford walked fewer than 200 batters and struck out 354 for the year. His pitchers also helped limit the opponents' running game, to the tune of just 20 steals in 54 attempts.

In 2019, Radford also ranked second in the Big South in team ERA and tallied a 2.5-1 strikeout to walk ratio. Two pitchers ranked in the top 10 in the league in ERA as Radford compiled its first 30-win season since 2015.

Rein led Radford's pitching staff to a 4.84 ERA in 2018, ranking fifth in the Big South. After leading the conference in wins, Austin Ross was named to the All-Big South first team after finishing the 2018 campaign with a 9-4 record, ranking 30th nationally in wins.

Prior to Radford, Rein also served as the pitching coach at Coker (S.C.) for two seasons and at Longwood for two seasons.

The 2011 Big South Pitcher of the Year and an ABCA All-American at Coastal Carolina, Rein spent parts of two seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system.

Blevins returns to NSU in the role of assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He will also coordinate camps, coach the outfielders and serve as first-base coach for the Spartans. This past season, Blevins was an assistant coach at Muksingum University.

Blevins served as an assistant coach for the Spartans during the 2019-20 COVID-19 year. Blevins has also coached two seasons at Coppin State and five seasons at Bluefield State prior to his stints with the Spartans.

McManus previously served as the director of baseball operations at UMBC. He will serve as the Spartans' defensive coordinator.

The Spartans are coming off their first-ever MEAC title and trip to the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship in 2021.
