DOVER, Del. – Valeria Otero posted 14 kills to lead host Delaware State over Norfolk 3-0 in MEAC volleyball action on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Hall. The set scores were 25-14, 25-18 and 25-20.
The Hornets (16-1, 4-0) hit .233 for the match and held NSU (4-11, 0-4) to a .072 percentage in topping the Spartans for the second time in the last week.
Shonte Seale had six kills to lead the Spartans.
Paola Matos chipped in with four.
Nicole Rodriguez had 12 digs.
Kristi Gomez had five kills and Otero four in the first set for the Hornets. NSU was within 10-8 after a Hornets' service error, but DSU used a 9-3 spurt to put distance between the two teams. DSU hit .444 in the opening set.
Seale's kill early in the second set helped the Spartans get off to a 4-1 start, but DSU again used a 9-3 run to take the lead.
DSU led by 10 points on multiple occasions in set three, but the Spartans made things interesting late in the set. A pair of blocks – one by
Gracie Teeter and
Caris Cross, and the other by Teeter and
Taylor Eichelberger – helped NSU close the gap. The second block brought NSU within 24-20, but Karen Cordero's kill ended the set.
Alondra Maldonado added six kills and Jasmal Cruz had 14 digs for DSU.
Teeter and
Rachel Williams both chipped in three kills for the Spartans.
Caris Cross had 13 assists.
The Spartans are home for their next two matches, beginning with a matchup against Coppin State at 6 p.m. Friday at Gill Gymnasium.
