NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State football team hits the road one more time this regular season to face Delaware State in a key MEAC contest on Saturday at Alumni Stadium in Dover. Kickoff is at 1 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on 91.1 FM and ESPN+.
The Spartans (6-3, 2-1 MEAC) enter the weekend coming off a tough 38-36 double overtime loss at North Carolina Central last Saturday. NCCU converted its two-point conversion try in the second overtime to outlast the Spartans.
Despite the loss, NSU still controls its destiny in the hunt for the Celebration Bowl. South Carolina State (4-0 MEAC) plays a non-conference game this weekend against North Carolina A&T and will enter the final weekend in first place in the conference. The Spartans and NCCU are both 2-1 in the league, but if NSU were to win out, the Spartans would clinch a tie for first and hold the tie-breaker advantages over both NCCU and SCSU in that case.
NSU piled up 483 yards of total offense last week in the loss, with redshirt freshman
J.J. Davis rushing for career highs of 217 yards and three touchdowns to earn MEAC Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors. Davis (739) now leads the conference in rushing.
Juwan Carter passed for 155 yards to become NSU's all-time leading passer. He can surpass the 9,000 career yards mark this week.
Delaware State is 4-5 overall, 1-2 in the MEAC after a 20-14 loss to Morgan State on Nov. 4. Running back Sy'Veon Wilkerson has been a stalwart for the Hornets this year, ranking second in the MEAC behind Davis with 732 rushing yards. He has rushed for seven touchdowns.
DSU quarterback Jared Lewis has 13 touchdown passes and just two interceptions this year.
