COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State rode a big first-half performance to an 86-48 win over Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at Value City Arena.
The game marked NSU's first-ever meeting against a Big Ten team. The Spartans played the Buckeyes – ranked 17th in the AP Poll and 25th in the WBCA Coaches Poll – within six points in the second half, getting 11 points each from
Tatiana Jones and
Janay Turner.
But OSU outscored NSU (2-1) 47-15 in the first half, holding the Spartans to 18.2 percent shooting in the stanza.
OSU shot better than 46 percent in each of the first two quarters and outscored NSU 15-2 from the foul line in the half. Jacy Shelton was 10-of-10 from the charity stripe for OSU in the opening half.
NSU played its best ball in the fourth quarter. Turner scored all 11 of her points in the period, hitting four field goals – three from behind the arc. Jones also hit a pair of field goals in the quarter.
Niya Fields, who had a team-high five assists in the game, handed out four of them in the final 10 minutes.
Jones paced NSU with seven boards.
Armani Franklin added nine points, seven in the second half. Both Fields and
Deja Francis were credited with a pair of steals.
Rebecca Mikulasikova led all scorers with 19 points for the Buckeyes (2-0). Taylor Mikesell had 12 on four triples. OSU enjoyed a 47-30 edge on the glass.
NSU remains in Big Ten country to face another nationally ranked team at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Indiana University, which is ranked in the top 10 in both polls.
