Efficient Spartans Ease Past SCSU, 3-0

NORFOLK, Va. – The trio of Paola Matos, Shonte Seale and Rachel Williams combined for 25 kills Friday night to lead Norfolk State to a convincing 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-23) win over South Carolina State at Gill Gymnasium.

The win was the eighth of the season for the Spartans (8-15 overall, 4-8 MEAC), their most since the 2013 team tallied 11.

NSU hit .289 as a team Friday and tied their season high with 10 aces in completing the season sweep of the Bulldogs (0-22, 0-12).

The Spartans surged to a 7-2 lead in set one thanks to four SCSU errors and kills by Seale and Matos. Matos posted four kills and NSU had three aces, two by Seale, in easily putting away SCSU in the opening set.

NSU again started strong in set two, scoring nine of the first 12 points. The Bulldogs battled back to get within a single point twice, the last time at 14-13. But the Spartans reeled off six straight points, three off swings by Williams, to pull away.

The Spartans never trailed in set three, leading by as many as seven points. SCSU got as close as one, 24-23, after a pair of Spartan errors. But Matos notched her match-high 11th kill of the night to give the Spartans the match.

Matos hit .381 with 11 kills against just three errors. Williams and Seale both added seven kills while combing for seven of the team's aces, four off Seale's jump serve. Caris Cross led the way with 33 assists while libero Nicole Rodriguez led the defense as usual with 20 digs.

Also for the Spartans, Shachia Lamb had a career-best two kills off the bench and Christian Wilson had her first collegiate kill.

The Spartans are back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. against North Carolina Central at Gill Gym.
