Shockers Spoil Tate's Career Night, Top Spartans 71-58

WICHITA, Kan. – Norfolk State forward Dana Tate Jr. scored a career-high 22 points, but host Wichita State held NSU to 37 percent shooting in a 71-58 win over the Spartans on Saturday at Koch Arena.

In a matchup of two NCAA tournament teams from last year, the Shockers (7-2) forced 14 NSU turnovers and were able to keep the Spartans (9-3) at arm's length most of the night.

Morris Udeze and Tyson Etienne scored 16 each for WSU.

NSU held an early 4-2 lead after a hook shot from Kris Bankston and a layup by Christian Ings off a feed from Bankston. But the Shockers scored the next 14 points to take the lead for good. NSU committed three turnovers and missed five straight shots in the Shockers' run.

But NSU battled back behind Tate and company. The junior forward, making his first start of the season, hit two 3-pointers in a 10-run NSU run that brought the Spartans within 25-21 with 4:27 left in the half. NSU got a tip-in by Bankston just before the first-half horn to send the Spartans into the locker room trailing 29-23.

Bankston's huge dunk plus free throw got the Spartans going in the second half, and Tyrese Jenkins nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing a short time later to bring NSU within 37-33.

The lead remained six (44-38) for WSU after a 3-pointer by Ings, but the Spartans were held without a field goal for the next four minutes as the Shockers gradually stretched their lead. Later, two free throws by Udeze gave WSU its largest margin of the half, 63-48, with 3:57 left.

NSU had one last push in it, as Joe Bryant Jr. and Tate hit 3-pointers in a 10-2 spurt that cut the Spartan deficit to 65-58 with 1:41 to play. But Dexter Dennis and Etienne hit triples on two straight WSU possessions as the hosts pulled away.

Tate made 8-of-14 from the floor, 5-of-6 from 3-point range, and added eight rebounds to pace NSU. Ings scored 11 points and handed out four assists, and Bankston chipped in 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting and seven boards.

NSU continues its December on the road with a matchup at Loyola Chicago next Sunday at 2 p.m.
