Williams, Spartans Finish Strong in 66-59 Win at George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – Mahoganie Williams posted 18 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks, and Norfolk State closed the game on a 10-1 run to earn a 66-59 victory at George Mason on Monday night at EagleBank Arena.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak for NSU (3-5). The Spartans did it in impressive fashion, holding the Patriots (6-4) to 27 percent shooting one game after the hosts upset Florida.

Five Spartans notched career highs in scoring in the win. Aside from Williams, Niya Fields poured in 12 points, Makoye Diawara nine, Danaijah Williams eight and Larri Sydnor (four) scored the first points of her collegiate career. Camille Downs also chipped in with 11 to aid in the balanced attack.

George Mason led by four early in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans battled back. Downs and Mahoganie Williams scored on consecutive possessions to push NSU into the lead at 56-55. GMU's Amaya Scott, a Bethune-Cookman transfer, answered by completing a three-point play with 4:39 left to put the Patriots back on top, 58-56.

But that would prove to be GMU's last field goal of the night. Mahoganie Williams tied the game up with a layup at the 2:57 mark. After a Patriot turnover, Downs converted 1-of-2 free throws to give the Spartans the lead for good, at 59-58, with 2:41 remaining.

Mason came up empty on its next two possessions, while the Spartans got jumpers on back-to-back possessions from Mahoganie Williams and Fields to extend their lead to five.

A Tamia Lawhorne free throw with 59 seconds to play was GMU's final point of the night and cut NSU's lead to 63-59. But Deja Francis and Fields combined to go 3-of-4 from the line in the final minute to seal NSU's win.

NSU held the hosts to 0-of-5 shooting and forced three turnovers in the final four and a half minutes.

"Mahoganie was a star today and our freshmen all really showed up and played huge minutes for us," NSU head coach Larry Vickers said. "We never let our lack of shots falling affect our defense and we continued to grind the entire game. Our offensive execution was really good late."

Mahoganie Williams and Downs each hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter, which saw the Spartans hit 43 percent from the floor. Leading 14-9 after one quarter, NSU went up by as many as eight points in the second period after a Downs free throw. GMU later used a 12-2 spurt to take a short-lived 28-26 lead, but Lacee Savage scored off an assist by Francis just before the break to tie the game up at 28-all.

Diawara had five early points in the third quarter to help NSU establish a 36-31 edge. The Patriots reclaimed the lead by getting to the free-throw line, with leading scorer Jordan Wakefield going 9-for-10 by herself from the charity stripe in the period to help spark a 15-4 GMU run.

The Spartans settled down, however, with Sydnor hitting two free throws and Fields a jumper to cut NSU's deficit to 46-44 entering the fourth.

NSU shot 54 percent from the floor and 78 from the free-throw line in the final period while committing just two turnovers to complete the comeback.

Mahoganie Williams was 8-of-14 from the floor and 2-of-3 from long range Monday night. Nine of her 10 rebounds came on the defensive end as she notched her second double-double of the year. She added three assists and one steal.

Fields was an efficient 5-for-7 from the floor and led the squad with five assists. Diawara was 4-for-6 from the floor in notching career highs in both points and rebounds (nine). Downs chipped in with six rebounds and four steals and Francis also hit the glass, recording seven rebounds.

Wakefield led all players with 27 points for GMU. But aside from her 6-of-15 shooting night, the rest of her team hit just 11-of-47 from the floor.

The Spartans continue their stretch of in-state opponents when they make the short trip across town to Chartway Arena to face Old Dominion on Sunday at 2 p.m.
