Spartans Begin MEAC Play with 3-0 Setback to A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina A&T handed the Norfolk State volleyball team a 3-0 loss as both teams began the MEAC portion of their season on Thursday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium.

The Aggies earned the sweep via scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-14. They hit .352 and held the Spartans to a .065 attack percentage.

NSU dropped to 1-4 on the season despite getting nine kills each from senior Taylor Eichelberger and freshman Paola Matos, the latter of whom also hit .389. The rest of the team combined for just five kills.

Fatimah Shabazz led all players with 12 kills, while Shaylynn Hall and Eddie Brewer each contributed seven for the Aggies, who improved to 1-1 on the season. Brewer also tallied 19 assists and 12 digs, and Hall added five blocks.

Matos and Eichelberger each had four kills in the first set, including early on to tie the score at 4-4. The Aggies slowly pulled ahead by six before NSU senior Rachel Williams had a kill and a service ace to cut the deficit to 14-11. A&T scored five in a row from there and led by as much as nine before the Spartans got a few points back late in the set.

The Aggies led 8-3 early in the second set and by nine just a short time later at 16-7. The Spartans scored the next three, the last two on an ace and a block. Eichelberger had two more kills as the set wore on, but A&T led by as much as seven the rest of the way.

NSU quickly fell behind by a 5-0 margin in the third set. After the Spartans had back-to-back blocks, the Aggies slowly extended their lead to seven. Matos and Williams hit two straight kills to make it 13-8 in favor of A&T, but the Spartans were unable to string together two straight points after that.

Junior libero Nicole Rodriguez tied Brewer with a match-high 12 digs.

The two teams will finish out the series on Friday at 1 p.m.
