Hosley's Complete Game Earns NSU Doubleheader Split with Longwood

NORFOLK, Va. – Danny Hosley pitched a complete-game three-hitter in a 2-1 Norfolk State win in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader with Longwood, earning a split of the day's games with the Lancers at Marty L. Miller Field.

Longwood took game one, 8-5.

Hosley (1-0) picked up his first win in just his second start of the season. He walked one batter and struck out five in pitching the Spartans' first complete game of the season.

Things didn't start auspiciously for the senior right hander in the first. Cullan Wadsworth, the second batter of the game, tripled to right field and scored one batter later on a Spartan error.

But that would be all Longwood could muster against Hosley. The only other hits he allowed were singles by Wadsworth in the third and Hunter Gilliam in the fourth. He retired the last eight batters he faced.

The Spartans (3-10) tied the game in the third. Mason Velasquez doubled with one out and advanced to third on a Longwood error. Ty Hanchey's fielder's choice grounder scored Velasquez.

NSU took the lead in the sixth. With two outs, Phillip Boykin tripled to left-center. Adam Collins singled down the third-base line to plate Boykin with the go-ahead RBI.

Collins and Velasquez went 2-for-3 and Brown was 2-for-4 for the Spartans, who outhit Longwood (7-7) 8-3.

In game one, Longwood scored twice in each of the first three innings as both teams swung the bat well early. Ricky Jimenez's RBI single highlighted a two-run first for the Lancers. Korey Singh cut that deficit in half for NSU with his third homer of the season, a solo homer in the top of the second.

Gilliam's two-run triple in the bottom of the second put the Lancers up 4-1, but NSU answered back with three in the third to tie it. Womack doubled in Brown to start the rally for the Spartans. Velasquez and Dylan Flint added RBI singles to square the score.

Longwood went ahead for good in the bottom of the third. Andrew Gorham singled in a run and scored on Michael Peterson's RBI double to put the Lancers up 6-4.

Womack singled in a run in the fourth for NSU, but that was the last time the Spartans scored. Gorham tripled in a run in the fifth and Eliot Dix singled in a run in the eighth to add some insurance for the Lancers.

Meanwhile, the Longwood bullpen tossed five shutout innings to finish off the win. Colton Hutt pitched a scoreless fifth inning to get credit for the win. Logan Berrier and Matt Shobe handled the next three frames before Dillon Champagne earned the save with a scoreless ninth.

Brown had a career-high three hits for the Spartans in the opener, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two steals. He finished the day with five hits total and Velasquez had four. Womack, Singh, Velasquez and Flint all finished 2-for-4 in the first game. Womack knocked in two runs.

Dix, Jimenez and Gorham all had two hits for Longwood.

The Spartans are back in action at home next weekend against Morehead State, beginning with a 3 p.m. game Friday at Marty L. Miller Field.
