NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State women's tennis celebrated Senior Day on Friday afternoon with a 4-0 win over North Carolina Wesleyan at the NSU Tennis Complex.
The Spartans won two of three doubles matches and then the top three positions in the singles lineup to end the afternoon. They improved to 3-5 on the year.
Senior
Paula Fortuno won in both singles and doubles, teaming up with freshman
Laura Ruiz for a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Talitha Rowan and Giulia Zanetti. Two more freshmen,
Andrea Barcenas and
Lydia Oviedo, won 6-1 as well over Chandler Brice and Julie Schoorsmans at the third position.
The Battling Bishops did come away with a win at the first doubles position, again 6-1, over the Spartan senior duo of
Zoe Fraser and
Bruna Goncalves.
Fortuno had to overcome a 6-0 loss in the first set at No. 1 singles to Wilske, and she did just that with 6-2, 6-4 wins in the second and third sets. Ruiz won at the second position, 6-2, 6-2, over Zanetti, and Barcenas pulled out a win over Mariotti at the third slot, 7-6, 6-1.
Fraser (No. 4), Goncalves (No. 5) and freshman
Zada McMorris (No. 6) all had either just started their respective matches or were about to hit the court when the overall match was called when NSU clinched.
"The ladies took care of business and got the job done," said NSU head coach
Larry Holmes. "Paula faced some adversity but pulled through in the end."
The Spartans will begin MEAC play on Friday at Howard.
