RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond scored 14 runs in a marathon third inning to break open a scoreless game and send the Spiders on their way to a 17-5 win over Norfolk State on Tuesday afternoon at Pitt Field.
Ty Hanchey,
Mason Velasquez and
Alsander Womack all homered and had two hits in the loss for the Spartans (7-15), who saw their season-long three-game winning streak snapped.
The Spiders (10-4) sent 18 batters to the plate, notching nine hits and benefitting from five walks in that decisive third inning. UR recorded four straight hits to lead off the inning, including Anthony Forte's RBI double. Austin Masel and Wyatt Ulrich also hit run-scoring doubles in the inning, with Ulrich knocking in two with his hit. Dominic Toso capped the long rally with a grand slam homer.
Ulrich added a two-run single in the fifth that made it 17-0.
The Spartans didn't go down without making some noise of their own. After Womack singled to lead off the sixth, Hanchey hit a two-run homer and Velasquez made it back-to-back homers with a solo shot to get the Spartans in the scoring column. Hanchey's homer was his second of the season, both in the last four games, and Velasquez's fourth, three of which have come in the last five contests.
Phillip Boykin hit an RBI single in the seventh and Womack led off the ninth with a solo blast, his second of the year, to account for NSU's final runs.
After pitching two scoreless innings to start the ballgame,
Ridge Walker (0-3) was saddled with the loss. He was charged with seven runs allowed in the third. Jordan Schulefand (3-0) pitched five innings and gave up three runs to pick up the win for the Spiders.
Hanchey finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base. Velasquez was also 2-for-4, and Womack was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Ullrich batted 4-for-6 with four RBIs for UR. Masel, Toso and Richie Ciufo all had three hits, with Toso also knocking in four.
The Spartans return to MEAC play this Thursday through Saturday when they host a four-game series with Delaware State at Marty L. Miller Field.
