NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State women's tennis wrapped up the regular season with a 4-1 win over Christopher Newport at home on Friday afternoon. The Spartans won the doubles point and then took three of the four singles matches that went to completion at the NSU Tennis Complex.

NSU improved to 8-5 on the year following its sixth straight win. Freshmen
Andrea Barcenas and
Lydia Oviedo each won in singles and doubles to lead the way.

"This was a good match to help us close out the regular season," said head coach
Larry Holmes. "The Captains were very competitive against us, and it was a good experience to prepare us for the conference tournament in a week."

Barcenas and Oviedo won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles over the CNU duo of Reagan Delp and Kara Ferner. The match quickly moved ahead after senior
Paula Fortuno and freshman
Laura Ruiz also won 6-2, defeating Megan Bauer and Kiersten Chang at No. 3 doubles.

Seniors
Zoe Fraser and
Bruna Goncalves were up 4-3 at the top spot in the lineup over Tessa Trate and Amanda Yermal before it was abandoned. Goncalves later clinched the win for the Spartans when she won 6-4, 7-6(6) against Karina Crivtonencu at No. 5 singles.

Barcenas made quick work of her opponent at No. 3 singles, downing Ferner 6-2, 6-0. Oviedo gave NSU its third point of the match when she took a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Yermal at the sixth position.

Trate, meanwhile, gave the Captains (5-3) their lone point of the afternoon when she downed Ruiz 6-4, 6-2 at second singles. Fortuno was up 3-6, 6-2, 2-1 in her No. 1 singles match over Delp, and Fraser was ahead 7-5, 4-6, 3-0 over Chang at No. 4 singles when both matches were abandoned.

The Spartans earned the No. 1 seed from the MEAC Northern Division after going 3-0 in conference play this year. They will take on the No. 2 seed from the South at 9 a.m. on April 24 in the MEAC Tournament semifinals at ODU's Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
