NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State women's tennis won its fourth match in a row with a 6-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday at the NSU Tennis Complex.
The Spartans made quick work of the Marlins in improving to 6-5 overall on the year. NSU surrendered no more than three games in any singles match after also winning all three doubles contests.
Both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles finished with NSU on top, 6-1. Seniors
Zoe Fraser and
Bruna Goncalves topped Virginia Wesleyan's Alexa Brewster and Audrey Bally at the first position, and freshmen
Andrea Barcenas and
Lydia Oviedo won at the No. 2 position over Shannon Lewes and Christine Zalameda.
Two more freshmen in
Laura Ruiz and
Zada McMorris also won in doubles, taking the third slot by a 6-2 score over Anna Rogers and Sophia Bibbo.
Ruiz did not drop a single game when it came to singles play, topping Brewster 6-0, 6-0 at the top slot in the lineup. Her doubles partner McMorris picked up her first career singles win with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Amanda Stegemann at No. 6 singles.
Oviedo topped Lewes at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-2. Seniors Fraser (No. 3) and Goncalves (No. 4) won the two middle positions. Fraser took a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Bally, and Goncalves posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Rogers.
Barcenas was ahead at No. 2 singles over Zalameda, 6-3, 3-0, when the match was abandoned.
The Spartans will head to Delaware State on Saturday to finish conference play. With both teams at 2-0, the winner will take the MEAC Northern Division title.
