NORFOLK, Va. – Kelyn Fox allowed just one run over eight innings, and Florida A&M topped Norfolk State 5-1 to take the weekend series between the teams on Sunday at Marty L. Miller Field.
Fox struck out eight and scattered seven hits against the short-handed Spartans (19-24, 15-9 MEAC), who got two hits from
Jacob Council and a solo homer by
Korey Singh in the loss.
Octavien Moyer's two-out, two-run single in the second inning ended up being the only runs that Fox needed. FAMU added three more in the seventh on a two-run triple by Joseph Pierini and an RBI single over a drawn-in infield by L.J. Bryant.
NSU scored its first run in the eighth.
Dionte Brown singled and scored on an RBI double by
Mason Velasquez.
Korey Singh then blasted his second homer of the series and team-leading seventh of the year with one out in the ninth against FAMU reliever Zach Morea, but that's all the Spartans could muster.
Bryant and Jared Weber had two hits each for FAMU (18-27, 12-8).
Dalton Barham (2-3) took the loss for NSU. He pitched into the seventh, allowing five runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.
Michael Portela pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the Spartans.
The Spartans are on the road for their next MEAC series, a four-game set at Coppin State starting on Friday in Hanover, Maryland.
