NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State volleyball head coach Kathy Bullock announced today her coaching staff for the upcoming season. Former Spartan Melvina Brown will be joined by Bria Anderson and Andrea' Dunlap in assisting Bullock with the Spartan volleyball program.
 
"I'm extremely excited to welcome this new coaching staff to the Spartan volleyball family," said Bullock. "They bring a wealth of volleyball knowledge and experience. They also bring energy and passion to the staff, which will help us propel this program to the next level. Norfolk State should be honored to have such a talented group of assistant coaches."
 
Anderson will serve as an assistant coach, while both Brown and Dunlap will be volunteer assistant coaches with next year's team.
 
Brown is no stranger to NSU volleyball, serving as the starting libero for the Spartans in 2016 and 2017 after transferring from West Virginia. She was twice named to an all-tournament team, and as a junior in 2016 was named to the VaSID Academic All-State Team. She ranked fifth in the MEAC in digs as a junior with 3.72 per set and seventh in service aces at 0.33. During her senior year in 2017, the Warrenton, Virginia native stood seventh in the league in service aces (0.32) and ninth in digs (3.42).
 
She currently ranks ninth all-time at NSU in career digs with 637. She graduated from NSU in the fall of 2018 with a bachelor's in mass communication. She served as a substitute teacher and coached for the American Volleyball Club in Manassas, Virginia prior to joining Norfolk State.
 
Anderson is also familiar with Norfolk State, having served as an intern with the academic enhancement office within the athletics department since January. She was a three-year captain and setter for the Virginia State volleyball team. She led the Trojans to a pair of CIAA Northern Division titles and a CIAA Tournament finals appearance in 2018 for the first time in program history.
 
She was named second-team All-CIAA as a sophomore in 2018 and preseason All-CIAA in 2019 prior to her junior year. Anderson was tabbed to the VaSID Academic All-State Team for 2019-20 and left VSU third all-time in program history in assists. A native of Cumberland, Virginia, Anderson graduated with a bachelor's in health, physical education and recreation from VSU in the spring of 2019 and a master's in sport management in the spring of 2021.
 
Dunlap played for four seasons at Georgia State from 2011-14, leading the team in total blocks as a junior in 2013 with 107 and in blocks per set her freshman year in 2011 with 0.94. She played in 89 matches during her four years with the program, compiling 291 kills and 255 blocks in her career.
 
She graduated with a bachelor's in political science with a concentration in international affairs from GSU in the spring of 2015, earning Sun Belt Academic Honor Roll accolades her junior year. Dunlap attended the University of Miami School of Law, graduating with her Juris Doctor degree with a concentration in social justice and public interest and her Master of Laws degree in international law in the spring of 2019.
 
NSU went 1-5 this year, 0-2 in the MEAC, before the program opted out of the remainder of the 2021 spring season on Feb. 26 due to COVID-19. The Spartans will announce their 2021 fall schedule later this summer.
