Davis, Redd Collect Weekly MEAC Football Honors

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State football team collected two more weekly MEAC football awards Monday, as freshman running back J.J. Davis won his second straight MEAC Rookie of the Week honor and junior right guard Justin Redd earned NSU's third consecutive MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Week accolade.

Davis rushed 14 times for 93 yards in Saturday's 28-16 win at St. Francis (Pa.). He also caught one pass for 23 yards and had 34 yards in kickoff returns, giving him 150 all-purpose yards in the victory. Davis is the MEAC's leading rusher this year, with 297 yards (74.2 per game).

Redd was part of a dominant front unit that paved the way for NSU to rush for 323 yards Saturday. The game marked NSU's second straight contest with more than 300 yards on the ground, the first time since 2010 that a Spartan team has achieved that feat in two straight games. Redd graded out at 98 percent on his assignments, had nine knockdown blocks and helped the Spartans hold the ball for more than 37 minutes.

The two honors Monday give NSU eight conference awards in the last three weeks. Davis has the last two MEAC rookie awards, while Redd's blocking award follows teammates Colby Byrd (Elizabeth City State game) and Jalen Powell (Wake Forest) in giving the Spartans three straight in that category.
