Spartans Handle Regent in Mid-Week Action, 3-0

NORFOLK, Va. – The trio of Paola Matos, Gracie Teeter and Shonte Seale combined for 26 kills in leading the Norfolk State volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Regent on Tuesday evening at Joseph Echols Hall.

The Spartans hit .232 and ran away with the victory, 25-19, 25-13, and 25-10. They hit .458 in the third set alone while holding Regent to a -.010 attack percentage for the match. NSU earned its second win in a row to improve to 2-3 on the year.

Matos and Teeter each had nine kills, and the duo combined to hit .517 to pace the Spartan attack. Seale added eight kills a day after earning the MEAC Co-Player of the Week Award.

Regent held the lead several times early in the first set, but Matos and Teeter combined for five kills during a 9-1 run that put the Spartans ahead by seven. They each had one more kill to help close out the set, although Regent again held early leads in the second set.

With senior Rachel Williams serving, NSU erased that Regent lead and scored seven straight points, part of an 11-1 run that made it 19-9. Seale's two kills and an ace from junior Siera Jones closed out the run, and Seale had two aces to help the Spartans close out the double-digit second-set win.

Williams served again in the third set, this time sparking a 10-0 run for NSU. She had two aces during that stretch, and Seale added four kills as she closed out the match on a strong note.

The Royals (0-2) finished with just 16 kills compared to 37 for the Spartans. Williams and senior Nicole Rodriguez both reached double figures with 16 and 13 digs, respectively. Freshman Caris Cross added 26 assists.

NSU will head to Towson this weekend to take part in the Tiger Invitational. The Spartans will Florida Atlantic and Temple on Friday followed by host Towson on Saturday.
